QAGOMA is two galleries in one, featuring contemporary Australian, Asian and Pacific art. The galleries include exhibitions, the Children’s Art Centre and the Australian Cinémathèque, which shows both free and ticketed films and videos. The galleries, cafes and shopping are just 900 metres from Novotel Brisbane South Bank on Stanley Place and open every day.

The main building is the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG). Just 150 metres away, and just a bit further along from Novotel Brisbane South Bank is the second building, known as the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA).

Two Queensland artists in the late 19th century decided Brisbane City needed a state art gallery. As artists themselves, they knew the value of expression and the educational benefits of art. After successfully lobbying the government for the state art gallery, it opened its doors in 1982 and has been treasured by the public ever since.
As art evolved, so did the Queensland National Art Gallery. Following the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) exhibition in 1993, The Gallery of Modern Art opened its doors in 2006. QAGOMA’s two galleries differ from each other but share the same purpose of showcasing art from all over the world to entertain, enlighten and educate the public.
