South Bank has a full and inspiring history. Travel back to 1930 and you will see the South Bank dotted with dance halls, markets, theatres and wharves. However this was not the initial plan. Early European settlers envisioned the area as Brisbane’s central business district. However, the realisation that it couldn’t occur was dramatic, with severe flooding washing away their plans. The CBD subsequently moved across the river to higher ground.

South Bank’s riverside industrial wharves were reinvigorated for the staging of World Expo 88 which attracted millions of people to the precinct. This inspired locals to pressure the Queensland Government to use the space as a public parkland, which was soon approved. Development happened gradually but South Bank is today deemed one of Australia’s favourite destinations, for locals and tourists alike.

The site is affectionately known as Brisbane’s cultural heart as it is home to art galleries, museums, theatres and smorgasbord of different cuisines and dining options. Postcards all over the world showcase Brisbane’s recognisable purple Bougainvillea flowers playing on the eye-catching arbour structure that runs the length of South Bank, or focusing on the iconic distinguishable Wheel of Brisbane.

South Bank Parklands is always buzzing with markets, events and festivals. From music and sporting events to the Night Noodle Markets and Brisbane and Le Festival. There’s never a shortage of things to do in this vibrant destination and Novotel Brisbane South Bank is only a couple of minutes walk from all the action.

If you’re not in town for the events, you can still relish the free wonders of this prominent location and get lost in the cosmopolitan lifestyle.
