Talk about back with a bang! The Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) and the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) currently feature a wealth of amazing exhibitions. An exhibition at GOMA we are currently very excited to explore is Gordon Bennett’s ‘Unfinished Business: The Art of Gordon Bennett’. The series showcases Bennett’s series in depth, focusing on unapologetically critiquing the construction of identities and how history shapes individual and shared cultural conditions. Bennett’s work spans installations, sculptural assemblage, paintings, drawings, videos and ceramics. QAG’s Mavis Ngallametta’s ‘Show me the way to go home’ is another exhibition you cannot miss when visiting Brisbane. Mavis was widely regarded one of the best indigenous artists in Australia. An elder of the Putch clan and a cultural leader of the Wik and Kugu people of Aurukun, her work explores her life and focuses on country, with a special focus on intertidal estuary and powerful bushfires. Furthermore, exhibitions like White Wash, Welcome to Colour Television & Kayili Car Bonnets deepen your understanding of what it means to be indigenous in Australia through art.
