Vibrant history of QPAC
The Queensland Performing Arts Centre is the centrepiece of storytelling and has been operating since 1985. It’s part of the cultural precinct in South Bank and works to serve the community and travellers from all over the world. This is done by working with artists and fostering good relationships with theatre companies to bring the audience performances that inspire new ways of thinking.
Brisbane’s cultural hub has evolved over the years from the city’s first entertainment venue called Croft’s Amphitheatre, which opened in 1847. South Brisbane was home to the well-known theatre, Cremorne. It was owned by John McCallum’s father, a notable Australian actor. The theatre has a rich history and while the original building turned to ash in 1954, the name still lives on as the Cremorne Theatre, one of the venues within QPAC.
