TWO GALLERIES WITH DISTINCT PERSONALITIES

Art connects visitors to worlds they may never have access to. QAGOMA is one of the largest museums of art in the country with more than 20,000 artworks from Australia and around the world.

QAGOMA is the term used for the two distinct personalities that make up the site:
The main building is the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG). Just 150 metres away, and just a bit further along from Novotel Brisbane South Bank is the second building, known as the the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA).

Choose your art experience by your mood or the extensive collections that you’re interested in viewing. Both sites are renowned for empowering you to look outside of your own reality and to encourage you to get lost in the exotic, quirky and truly unique sides of life. Visitors can view inspiring installations, cultural and historic pieces of art and interactive exhibitions, The Australian Cinémathèque is also housed at the QAGOMA complex.

The gallery is also home to a Children’s Art Centre for families, with a focus on activities which are generally free and empower children’s imagination.

The Queensland Art Gallery is also home to the vibrant, individualistic and culturally rich work of Indigenous Australian artists.

After spending the day frolicking in the halls of Queensland galleries, come home to Novotel Brisbane in South Bank which is only a short walk from Brisbane’s QAGOMA.

THE RICH HISTORY OF QAGOMA

Two Queensland artists in the late 19th century decided Brisbane City needed a state art gallery. As artists themselves, they knew the value of expression and the educational benefits of art. Galleries can provide an insight into other cultures and work as a visual representation of moments in history that moulded our societies into what they are today. After successfully lobbying the government for the state art gallery, it opened its doors in 1982 and has been treasured by the public ever since.

As art evolved, so did the Queensland National Art Gallery. Following the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) exhibition in 1993, The Gallery of Modern Art opened its doors in 2006. QAGOMA’s two galleries differ from each other but share the same purpose of showcasing art from all over the world to entertain, enlighten and educate the public.
