Banning all single-use plastic amenities

Single-use plastics harm the environment significantly as they take hundreds of years to decompose. This poses a threat to wildlife and ecosystems as they break down into microplastics, which can then be ingested by animals such as turtles and ultimately find their way into the food chain, including human consumption. This is why a major initiative that we have completed is to eliminate all single-use plastic amenities. As hotel accommodation in South Bank Brisbane, we are proud of the positive impact that this will make on the local environment and the wider environment as a whole.

We have replaced all single-use hair wash, lotion and soaps with mounted refillable dispensers which are made from 100% recyclable materials and eco-conscious products. Reducing food waste

Another initiative we have embraced is the reduction of kitchen food waste. Minimising food wastage is crucial for advancing towards a sustainable food system. The food production significantly contributes to deforestation and consumes considerable resources like water and energy, often requiring extensive transportation. Therefore, reducing food wastage means preserving these vital resources involved in production.

Through partnerships with local producers for fresh regional products and initiatives to minimise food waste, we actively promote responsible practices among our guests, delivering a conscientious hospitality experience and being one of the best hotels in South Bank Brisbane.

An exemplary demonstration of this ethos is our Tooth Fish special. Our Executive Chef sources the entire fish, ensuring every component serves a purpose.

The bones contribute to a flavourful stock, while the belly and trimmings are repurposed into nutritious staff meals. The delectable fillets become the focal point, allowing us to showcase the essence of the Tooth Fish deliciously and sustainably.

Reduce our carbon footprint

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide, emitted directly or indirectly by human activities.

To reduce our carbon footprint as a hotel and event venue in Brisbane, we encourage our guests hosting an event or large group accommodation to calculate the carbon footprint their experience using the NET ZERO CARBON CALCULATOR and invest in carbon projects of their choice to balance emissions.

Rethinking the bed linen and towel change to reduce energy and water

We also promote and encourage responsible practices from our guests as well. This includes asking our guests to hang their towels up if they do not wish for them to be changed. To save energy and water, sheets are also customarily changed every third day of a stay however guests do have the option to request a change by using a card that is placed in the room.

These are just a few initiatives we have introduced in our efforts to be a sustainable hotel. Recently, we achieved a major milestone, the prestigious Sustainable Tourism Certification from Ecotourism Australia.

Introduced in 2022 and recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), this certification assesses four pillars of sustainability: sustainable management, environmental impacts, cultural impacts and socio-economic impacts.

LONE PINE KOALA SANCTUARY

It is safe to say that there is no shortage of amazing restaurants in Brisbane. Last year, Brisbane was able to welcome many new flavours to the table. The below restaurants are in no particular order, simply some of our favourites to date. Joy Restaurant – Founded by chefs Tim and Sarah Scott in 2019, this Fortitude Valley gem has quickly taken our hearts by storm. Shrouding the restaurant in mystery, you will not know what is on the menu until you arrive at Joy, but you can be sure that it will be delicious. Offering only about eight seats, pending the most current restrictions, you will definitely need to book your table quite a bit in advance. Elska – Elska is an old, Nordic translation for love, a love for food that you can taste with every meal at this intimate twelve-seater degustation restaurant. Highlighting local produce and expertly preparing it with Nordic culinary techniques, dining at Elska is a beautiful journey. Agnes – An ode to wood-fired cooking, Agnes has quickly gained a loyal following, combining the ancient skill of cooking over fire with contemporary hospitality. While no dishes at Agnes subscribe to any specific cuisine, all meals have been touched by wood-fired cooking in some way. Ironbark, apple wood, olive wood & cherry wood are all used to give ingredients their unique flavour. In summary, Brisbane’s wealth of exquisite dining experiences means that there is no limit to luxury and degustation dining.

Shopping at James Street

Dressing yourself in luxury, quite literally. James Street is one of the best spots in Brisbane to live out your shopaholic self. All escape rooms also have a different theme, and are animated accordingly, with Quest offering: Sherlocked, Escape the Jigsaw and The Lost Tomb. Toowong Cemetery Ghost Tour

Walk among the dead at Brisbane’s largest cemetery in Toowong. Did you know a workout is a guaranteed way to increase your endorphin levels? Not that you needed an excuse to soak up the beautiful Brisbane summer sun, but here are some of our favourite, easy ways to get outdoors and break a sweat in the River City!

Public fitness equipment

Lucky for Brisbanites and visitors alike, there is a multitude of publicly available, free fitness equipment in parks all over the city. While exercise equipment differs in every park, it almost always includes static equipment for chin-ups, sit-ups and step-ups as well as interactive and movable equipment for cardio and resistance training. Much of the equipment is similar to the machines you would find in a gym and there is instructions on most of the machines too, ensuring a safe and fun workout. The closest outdoor gym in South Bank is located directly on the Brisbane River, near the Riverside Drive Pontoon. It is located underneath a bridge, so shaded all day long, perfect for those sweaty summer workout sessions! Other locations near South Bank include Orleigh Park and on Kurilpa Street, both in West End. You can see them on the map HERE.

Running tracks

Whether you are an everyday runner, a once-in-a-while runner or more of a walk and run runner, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting a route in our river city. Many routes hug the river, granting you stunning views and making any pain so much more bearable. One of our favourite tracks is the Brisbane Riverwalk, which takes you 1.5km from Brisbane’s iconic story bridge to Merthyr Road in New Farm, from which you can continue on to New Farm Park for a total of 3.2km. For a slightly longer run, why not start here in South Bank along The Arbour, across the Kurilpa Bridge, which won the 2010 Engineering Awards, continuing onto the Bicentennial Bikeway heading towards the Brisbane City Botanical Gardens. After doing a loop through the Botanical Gardens and admiring the floral beauty, head back to South Bank across the Goodwill Bridge. Make sure to stop for a coffee on top of the bridge at ‘Café on the Goodwill Bridge’, after all you’ve earned yourself a little reward with this 6km beauty of a run! Other beautiful spots to strap up your runners are the Roma Street Parklands, Mt Coot-tha Summit Track (steep and more of a trail-run across rocky terrain!) or heading towards the Kangaroo Point Cliffs from South Bank.

Stairways to heaven

Everybody can walk on flat ground right?! If you really want to break a sweat, try some of Brisbane’s best staircase fitness challenges. Arguably the most famous of which being the Kangaroo Point stairs. Starting at the bottom of the cliffs, there’s only 107 steps between you and an impressive view over the river and city, definitely worth the sweat. . As it is a fairly narrow staircase, you may find yourself sharing it with a few other people, but believe us, you will need those breaks! Another heart-pumping staircase challenge are the Wilson Outlook Reserve Stairs at Howard Smith Wharves. If you have ever taken the elevator down to Felons Brewing, you will know that the 120 stairs leading up or down the cliffs are anything but easy! Try them next time you are walking or running along the New Farm Riverwalk, they make for a great little detour with stunning views over the Story Bridge and Brisbane city. Alternatively, why not head out of the city for a little bit of peace and quiet. At Mount Coo-tha, the 900m long Kokoda trail, takes you uphill fast and sure makes for a pumpy workout.

Cycling tracks

Cycling tracks in Brisbane are about as common as cafes on every street corner. There is a LOT to choose from and many scenic routes taking you all around Brisbane’s most stunning pockets. If you don’t have a bike, don’t worry! CityCycle stations provide bikes for free for the first 30 minutes, then it’s a mere $2/hour and $5/ every thirty minutes after that. Riverlife also let you hire a mountain bike for $25/day. Staying in the city, the 36km long Brisbane River Loop leads along the Brisbane River, as the name suggests, and passes by Kangaroo Point, out to the University of Queensland in St. Lucia as well as along Howard Smith Wharves and New Farm Park. Definitely one of our all-time favourites is the Kedron Brook bikeway, an extremely quiet, green and scenic path taking cyclists out to Nundah and ultimately all the way to Sandgate, totaling an impressive 24kms. If you don’t mind going up a mountain, the Mount Coot-tha Loop is an incredibly beautiful loop, ultimately taking you to Brisbane’s most famous lookout spot. You can either choose to cycle up the 10km loop or head straight up the shorter, winding main road, which features a wide bike lane. A word of warning though: This route is STEEP!

Dancing

A fun way to get your body moving is dance! Friday nights are Salsa dancing nights at Reddacliffe Place which is located in between the Treasury Brisbane Casino and the Brisbane City Central Library. Strangers will soon become friends and don’t worry if you have never danced before, there are free dancing lessons from 8pm that will teach you the infamous Latin American dancing style. South Brisbane Laneways

Melbourne and Sydney are known for their street art, but did you know that Brisbane also has its fair share of amazing artworks? Blending in perfectly with the edgy surrounds, you can snap some shots when walking through South Brisbane’s infamous Fish Lane. ‘Adrift’ by Loretta Lizzio, ‘The Harvest’ by Mimi and ‘Message in a bottle and octopus’ by Fuzeillar are just some of the artworks you can explore. While you’re there, grab a wine from La Lune or a pizza from Julius Pizzeria, true Brisbane institutions. Continuing onto Boundary Street via Merivale Street, you can follow it all the way into Brisbane’s most trendy suburb, West End. The suburb’s laid-back flair also gave way too much of the street art you can admire on buildings and in between residential Queenslanders.

Mount Coot-tha & Botanical Gardens

Of course, Mount Coot-tha belongs on this list. What would Brisbane be without its popular No.1 lookout spot? Located just west of the city, make sure to head to the top for sunset, as you can watch the sun illuminating our river city as it disappears behind the skyscrapers. Another location in close vicinity to the Coot-tha lookout are the Mount Coo-tha Botanical Gardens. Many native and exotic plants call the gardens home and make for amazing photo backdrops. One that you can definitely not miss is the botanical garden’s tropical dome (cover photo). Its geodesic structure is insanely Instagram-worthy.

University of Queensland

Nestled in close proximity to the Brisbane River, the university’s St. Lucia campus boasts 114 hectares of beautiful sandstone buildings, contemporary architecture and landscaped gardens and lakes. Its great court is heritage listed for a reason, so hop on the next City Cat and fly down river to wander through this iconic campus.

Gallery of Modern Art

Regularly featuring some of the world’s most renowned artists, exhibitions at the Gallery of Modern Art are one not to be missed. Ai Weiwei’s giant chandelier is by far the most impressive piece of lighting one has ever seen and instantly boosts any Instagram account. The gallery’s most current exhibition, Mavis Ngallametta’s ‘Show me the way to go home’ offers lush backdrops of incredible indigenous art pieces, detailing nature’s many facets. Obviously, only take photos when allowed to do so.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

Get up close and personal with Australia’s most famous inhabitants. Koalas, kangaroos, wallabies and many more residents await you at the sanctuary and cannot wait for you to feed & cuddle them! Plus, they’ve always got a smile ready when you pull out your camera.

Fairy light trees QUT or Captain Burke Park

Imagine a whole tree wrapped in nothing but fairy lights. Sounds like straight out of a fairy tale and too good to be true? Well, not in Brisbane! At the Queensland University of Technology’s city campus as well as at Captain Burke Park in Kangaroo point, you can shoot giant fig trees, magnificently illuminated against the night sky. You’re welcome.

St John’s Cathedral

When driving past St John’s Cathedral on Brisbane’s Ann Street, you may quickly notice this building is very different from the surrounding high rises to its left & right. Built from Brisbane tuff (it’s a type of rock, and it’s pretty tough too) and sandstone, the outside is almost as stunning as the church’s interior. Its gothic revival style boasts high, arched ceilings, which would feature oh-so perfectly on your feed.

Enoggera Reservoir

Who says you have to travel far to get a slice of nature’s goodness? The Enoggera Reservoir is comprised of stunning, lush, green forest and an ever-so-blue lake. This blue and green stage can only be enhanced by the blooming flower lilies, at special times of the year. Located a short 40-minute drive from the Brisbane CBD, the reservoir makes for the ultimate half-day big smoke getaway.

Rise and shine! Waking up with the sun, or in this case, before, has never been more worth it. Mount Coot –tha, Brisbane’s iconic lookout spot is 15 minutes’ drive west from the hotel. There, you can watch the sunrise over the ocean and slowly light up Brisbane. Take a picnic blanket, bring some breakfast & coffee and admire the sunrise in all its glory from Mount Coot -tha’s grassy lookout area. You can even get a closer look through one of the telescopes. Getting there is very easy, with the bus 471 taking you all the way to the top. Alternatively, you can opt to drive or bicycle there.

Brisbane’s café and coffee culture

There is nothing quite like walking into a bustling café, hearing the coffee machines hiss while wrapping your hands around a freshly made ‘flat white’. In case you are wondering what a ‘flat white’ is, there is really only one explanation: Australia’s coffee and café culture is unlike any other, with many Australian cities taking extreme pride in the art of making coffee. You will find many cafes dotted all around Brisbane, but the majority is centred in and around South Bank, West End and the Brisbane CBD. West End is only a short walk away from South Bank and our favourite places are the newly developed West Village and the Boundary Street Markets.

Are you ready to break a sweat? If you wander around Brisbane in the mornings, you will find plenty of people exercising. And what better way to make use of the milder mornings! Medibank is currently offering their extremely popular ‘Feel Good’ program again, which includes Yoga, Zumba, Tai Chi and many more classes. South Bank is just about the best spot to exercise too, with its South Bank Parklands and stunning views of the Bougainvillea Archway and the Brisbane river. Getting up early will also help beat the crowds at the South Bank lagoon, which is a popular attraction during the day for locals and tourists alike. Australia’s only man-made, inner city lagoon boasts a sparkling blue water pool and a white sandy beach to make your mornings the highlight of your day.

Shop for treasurers at the Collective Markets & Farmer’s Markets

Mornings are perfect for checking out Brisbane’s many farmers & art markets. Apart from great specials on the freshest Queensland fruit and veggies, markets are perfect for discovering local handicraft and you are guaranteed to find a special gift for a loved one too! The Brisbane Collective Markets are on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday and you can find them in the middle of South Bank plaza, next to the lagoon. Shop for art, crafts and clothing. While you are there, use the early morning to your advantage and snap a photo of the popular ‘Brisbane’ sign just outside of the Queensland Performing Arts Center without having to share the glory with anyone.
